Which supermarket is cheapest in Australia?

Aldi is typically cheapest for everyday staples — often 10–30% lower than Coles or Woolworths on comparable items. However, Coles and Woolworths half-price specials can beat Aldi on specific products each week. Use CartSavvy to compare current prices across all stores before you shop.

Is Aldi cheaper than Coles and Woolworths?

Generally yes for the items Aldi stocks, but Coles and Woolworths rotate half-price specials that can undercut Aldi on a given week. CartSavvy shows unit prices ($/kg, $/L) across all three so you can compare like-for-like rather than just pack price.

What is unit pricing and why does it matter?

Unit price is the cost per standard measure — $/kg, $/100g, or $/L. It lets you compare two different pack sizes fairly: a 500 g pack at $3 is actually more expensive per gram than a 750 g pack at $4. CartSavvy displays unit prices for every product so you always know the true cost.

Does CartSavvy compare Harris Farm prices?

Yes. Harris Farm products appear alongside Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi on CartSavvy's grocery page, including unit prices and any active discounts. Harris Farm often stocks premium and organic lines not found at the major chains.

Are Coles and Woolworths specials real discounts?

Not always. Some items are marked as 'on special' but haven't been sold at the higher 'was' price in weeks. CartSavvy flags these with a 'possibly a misleading discount' warning when the data suggests the reference price is inflated.

Can I compare Asian grocery prices in Australia?

Yes — CartSavvy compares prices at uMall, Asian Pantry, eBest, and JFC Online alongside the major supermarkets. Filter by 'All Asian Stores' to see deals specific to Asian grocery retailers.

How often are prices updated?

Prices are indexed fresh each morning from Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Harris Farm, and all 22 stores CartSavvy tracks. The last update time is shown in the footer of every page.

Misleading Discounts

What is a perpetual special?

A perpetual special is when a supermarket marks a product as 'on special' with a crossed-out 'was' price, but that higher reference price has never actually been charged. CartSavvy flags products where the claimed was-price has not been observed in the previous 21 days and the claimed discount is 50% or more.

How does CartSavvy detect perpetual specials?

CartSavvy scrapes Coles and Woolworths prices every day. If a product has been 'on special' for 14 or more of the past 21 days, its was-price has never been seen as the actual selling price in that window, and the claimed discount is 50% or more, CartSavvy flags it as a perpetual special.

Are these definitely misleading?

Not necessarily — CartSavvy uses the word 'possibly' deliberately. The flagging is based on observed data over 21 days. A product that was genuinely sold at the higher price before CartSavvy began tracking would be incorrectly flagged. Use this as a guide, not a verdict.

What categories appear most often?

Liquor products dominate — wines and spirits at Coles Liquorland are frequently marked at 75–83% off prices that have not been observed as the actual selling price. Some dairy and grocery products are also flagged.

How many perpetual specials are there right now?

Currently 54 products across Coles and Woolworths are flagged as possibly misleading discounts.
